How to remove wrinkles from my slipcovers?Updated 10 months ago
When your slipcovers arrive, they might have wrinkles or creases due to the folding and packaging process. This is a common issue with all fabrics.
Once you take them out of the packaging and install them on your sofa, these wrinkles will typically start to relax and straighten out over 1-2 weeks. The fabric gradually adjusts to the shape of your sofa, and the weight of the fabric helps to smooth out the lines.
Removing Wrinkles
If you wish to expedite this process, here are several effective methods:
1. Iron
Set your iron to a warm or medium setting (check our fabric care guide for fabric-specific temperature settings). To avoid direct heat on the fabric, place a piece of cloth, such as a sheet or towel, between the iron and your slipcover. While natural fabrics can handle direct heat, synthetic fabrics may warp and create bubbles if ironed directly.
2. Garment Steamer
Garment steamers use steam to penetrate and loosen fabric wrinkles. Aim the handheld steam outlet at the wrinkled areas and gently tug the fabric as you steam. This method is effective and can be done while the covers are installed on your sofa. The lower heat from steam reduces the risk of warping synthetic fabrics.
3. Quick-Fix Method
If you don't have a garment steamer, a hair dryer and a water mist sprayer can be used. After a few spritzes of water, run the hair dryer set to low heat over the wrinkled areas to smoothen the wrinkles. Best used as a quick fix, especially for smaller spots.
Tips for Storing Slipcovers
Store your slipcovers in the provided cloth bag to allow them to breathe. Avoid using plastic packaging or vacuum storage, as this can cause mildew or mould.
